GRATITUDE SPEAKS: Post-Shark Tank with Sarah & Jess of PiperWai

My inner truffle pig finds what’s awesome and loves sharing it with all of you. With that innate goodie radar it’s not surprising that I truffled upon PiperWai and featured them in Gratitude Beauty way before they got a deal with Barbara Corcoran on Shark Tank.

I’m thrilled to check in with Sarah Ribner and Jess Edelstein, co-founders of PiperWai, who’ve been best friends and business partners ever since they ran a lemonade stand the summer after 4th grade. If you’re not yet familiar with their product, here’s the scoop: PiperWai is an all natural, non-toxic deodorant made from odor-absorbing activated charcoal, nourishing shea butter, coconut oil, and a proprietary blends of essential oils that’s absolutely delightful, gender-friendly. The silver-grey color of the deodorant crème becomes invisible once you’ve applied it. It’s a spa in your pits.

Why go with a natural, non-toxic deodorant? For one, the toxic burden from polluted air, water, soil, and food is high enough these days to keep your liver working overtime so putting extra chemicals on your body will make you look fatter, older, uglier faster. Conventional deodorants are made with aluminum, parabens, and synthetic fragrances, among other franken-substances -- all of which are less than excellent for your wellbeing and kick-ass performance.

The beauty of PiperWai is that it neutralizes odor and absorbs moisture naturally. Smell, great, look great, feel great -- what else could you want from a deodorant? Choose from the original glass jar or new stick applicator. Both are certified vegan, cruelty-free, and made in the USA.

I adore fierce female entrepreneurs and can’t wait to hear what Sarah and Jess have to share. Love when the truffle pig comes full circle. Enjoy and get yourself happy, healthy pits.

How have your life and business changed after making a deal with Shark Tank’s Barbara Corcoran?
We always knew PiperWai would be huge someday since we have an excellent product that solves a very common and personal problem. Even before Shark Tank we had an incredibly passionate and supportive customer base, which grew virtually overnight after our company aired. The growth that we envisioned for PiperWai was accelerated by going on Shark Tank, so our lives changed drastically in the coming months as all the long term plans we had for hiring, expanding distribution, contracting with new retailers, and upgrading to a larger manufacturer all of a sudden everything was happening within 12 months!
How is PiperWai different from other natural deodorants out there?
Unlike many of our competitors, PiperWai doesn’t irritate sensitive skin because it doesn’t rely on irritating baking soda as the sole odor-neutralizing ingredient. Rather, PiperWai combines moisturizing ingredients such as coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter and Vitamin E with super-absorbent activated charcoal to work with your body to neutralize odor and absorb sweat like no other.

What’s in the pipeline at Piperwai HQ (vision, mission, action)?
When we started PiperWai, we knew we wanted to use this opportunity to give back. In 2016 alone, we raised over $17,000 for our charity partners including Back on My Feet, Young Enraptures Academy of Philadelphia, and Twist Out Cancer, Living Beyond Breast Cancer. Additionally we donated over 1,000 products to fundraisers and other causes for The Beauty Pantry/NJCCHS, Bowery Mission/Full Circle, the Butte Humane Society and Gilda’s Club. We will continue our quarterly point-of-sale donation campaign, where our customers get 10% off their orders at and another 10% is donated back to our charity partners. Going forward, we’re also considering new supplier relationships that allow us to purchase the same top quality ingredients while supporting a social cause.
PiperWai also has some exciting products in the pipeline. For three years, we built our company on a stellar product made with quality ingredients, that WORKS. Now that we have the ability to expand, we surveyed our community for new product recommendations. Our first new product is the highly-anticipated stick applicator version of PiperWai, which launched this past holiday season.
How do you define gratitude, and what are you grateful for?
Sarah: I define gratitude as the ability to step back and appreciate all that you’ve accomplished. In our busy, overly connected culture we tend to get lost in the daily grind. It’s easy to fall into the trap of a “happiness treadmill” where chase after the next milestone without truly stepping back to enjoy what we’ve already accomplished. I’m grateful for PiperWai’s overall impact. We sell a product that solves a very personal issue without relying on synthetic chemicals or any ingredients that could be potentially harmful to our bodies. PiperWai’s impact goes beyond the product in that our company’s core values promote healthy living and philanthropy.
When did you experience significant personal growth, and how did it impact your perspective on life?
Sarah: I’ve experienced the most personal growth from overcoming the challenges in my life. Although entrepreneurship has been an incredibly rewarding journey, it didn’t come without its pitfalls, which often coincided with personal health-related struggles I experienced over the last couple years. Now more than ever I believe in the transformative power of a healthy, holistic lifestyle, which helped me to stay resilient and strong enough to accomplish even more than I thought I could!
Jess: Everything in my life finally starting clicking into place in the 12 months following Shark Tank. I bought a house, got engaged, and finally felt “successful” at a career my best friend and I literally built from scratch in my kitchen. Suddenly, it felt like the pain, struggle, insecurities, and rejection I endured searching for my “purpose” in life was for a reason; the gratitude I feel every day now is way more intense because the road was challenging than it would be if the success were just handed to me. I guess I’m also grateful for the innate grit that got me here, otherwise I would have given up a long time ago and just gotten a regular job.
