Attila Hildmann’s turned the culinary world on its ear by making vegan cooking sexy. All chiseled and toned now, Attila made a quantum leap in his body and mind set 14 years ago that would ultimately launch his career. His first 2 cookbooks, Vegan for Fun and Vegan for Fit, outline his journey from veganizing comfort foods to stepping up the game in order to gain optimal fitness. What’s more, Attila’s created a movement that challenges people to adopt a vegan diet and exercise routine over a given period of time to see if they can improve their health & wellbeing. This German physicist-turned-bestselling-author/chef also knows a thing or two about business, drives many a guy’s dream sports car, donates to the local animal shelter, and has his eyes set on Hollywood. I’m excited to interview Attila for Gratitude Speaks to hear how he feels about art, growth, and gratitude.
1) How do you define gratitude, and what are you grateful for?
I am grateful for being healthy and that I am able to live my dream and share my passion about healthy vegan cooking. I am grateful to wake up every morning and know that I am surrounded by lovely people like my mum, friends and the team I am able to work with.
2) What is art to you?
I am an artist myself because I develop recipes that are cooked by thousands of people. Every recipe is a piece of art because it's unique and no one has ever done it before like this. Even the slightest variation in seasoning will change the whole outcome of a recipe.
3) When did you experience significant personal growth, and how did it impact your perspective on life?
I lost my father in 2000 due to a heart attack. I was shocked but also worried about myself because I was severely overweight, weighing 230 pounds and I had a high cholesterol level as well. I cut out all the products that contain cholesterol and ended up eating a vegan diet. It completely changed my whole body, my life and my career. I've sold more than 750.000 vegan cookbooks in two years in the German-speaking countries but it all started with a tragedy but I grew out of it and became the person I wanna be and represent.
4) What other gems of joy & wisdom would you like to share with us?
Never stop believing in yourself. At first, people and the media laughed at me. TV stations didn't want to invite me to their shows and said that the audience wouldn't be interested in a guy cooking vegan. But that didn't stop me so I wrote down everything I know. I wanted to help people to get lean and fit without feeling hungry so I wrote "Vegan for fit". It became a #1 bestseller on amazon and thousands of people got inspired by it and lost weight easily. Today I am on TV almost every week and my books have been available in the US since March 1st. Whatever people tell you, never stop believing in your dream and in your goal!
